Please look out for our GOLDEN OLDIES BELOW AMONGST OUR OTHER DOGS AVAILABLE FOR RE-HOMING- These are dogs that are looking for special loving retirement homes, and may suit someone who is looking for an older, quieter dog, who is perhaps not going to need quite so much exercise as a younger dog might, but just as much love! These dogs can hopefully still have a good few years of life left in them yet, and in that time they can give bundles of love and companionship to someone. Here at West Hatch we appreciate the concerns of adopting an older dog, for example, the possibility of vets fees, etc, therefore with our Golden Oldies, they could be adopted on an 'assisted adoption' basis. This means that if required the new owners would be able to bring the dog back here to the centre for veterinary care and treatment with our vet by appointment, and the cost of this would be covered by the charity 'Friends Of West Hatch', directly set up to help support this centre. This does not cover prescription diets, and we would ask people to use this cover sympathetically.

Unlike most other RSPCA Centres, we do not allow the public to view the available dogs by wandering around the kennels. During the time when we were closed due to the foot and mouth crisis, we began to re-home dogs by matching the owners requirements to the temperaments and needs of each dog. We found that when people did not choose dogs initially by appearance (which would happen when wandering around the kennels), we ended up having far more successful re homing, and our return rates reduced. We have continued to re-home the same amount of dogs as before and have also found it to be beneficial to the welfare of the dogs. Animal Centres are very stressful places for any animal, but especially for dogs. We have found that since the public have not been walking past the kennels, they stay calmer and suffer less stress. There has also been a decrease in aggression related problems.
If you are interested in taking on a dog, please telephone the Centre during our opening hours to discuss the dogs we have available. When you come to the Centre, a member of staff will have an informal interview with you to find out your requirements and will be able to show you pictures of any dogs which might suit. If you would then like to view these dogs, they will be brought over for you to meet. |

Maddy Maddy is a young adult female who we believe to be a terrier cross collie. Maddy came to the centre with no history, she can be uncomfortable with people she doesn't know, but once she gets to know someone she is extremely friendly and affectionate with a very sweet nature. She loves to run and play fetch, and will charge around with a toy for ages. She loves to have a cuddle and a tummy tickle, and will sit and give paw for a treat. She is likely to develop separation problems if this is not addressed from the start, and really needs to go to experienced owners. Maddy could be rehomed with to live with another dog, but it would have to be the right dog, and she must attend some adult dog socialisation classes/groups to help build her confidence with people and other dogs. Maddy does have a flea allergy, as is common with a lot of animals so new owners will need to be vigilant and ensure she is flea treated regularly. She had a small balding patch on her back due to this allergy but this has grown back since being with us and she now has a lovely coat. She can get a little bit wound up on the lead around certain other dogs, she has been mixed with other dogs with no conflict occurring, she just isn't sure how to act. Maddy would not be suitable to be homed with young children as she can be quite excitable, especially if encouraged, but would be okay with sensible teenagers, and could not be rehomed with cats. Please consider giving Maddy a home. She is an incredibly sweet dog who has just had an unsettled little life, and just needs a special person with the time and patience to bring her on. In return her new owners will be rewarded with a loyal loving companion.

![]() Mavis 'GOLDEN OLDIE'
Mavis is a Mastiff bitch, who is approximately nine to ten years old. She is a lovely friendly old girl, who is looking for a quiet and comfortable retirement home with someone experienced with this breed of dog. She came to the centre with very little history, but we do think she is housetrained and therefore she would probably be ok to be left for a few hours a day. Mavis does not get on with other dogs or cats and would therefore need to be re-homed as an only pet. She would not be suitable to be re-homed to live with children due to her size and age. Mavis would make a lovely companion for someone who is looking for an older large breed of dog. She is young at heart with a cheeky nature and hopefully still has a lot of life left in her yet and a lot of joy to bring! She enjoys playing with her toys and loves a game of fetch. If you are looking for a dog to give lots of love and cuddles to, who will be a great loyal companion, then she is the dog for you! Being a little older, Mavis does have a bit of arthritis but she still enjoys her walks. Due to Mavis's age she would go to her new home under an assisted adoption basis. This means that her new owners would be able to bring her back here to the centre for veterinary care and treatment if required and the cost of this would be covered by the charity 'Friends Of West Hatch', directly set up to help support this centre. This does not cover prescription diets. Mavis' requirements are few, she is looking for a comfy warm bed, two square meals a day, some toys, a nice garden and a human to give her lots of cuddles and affection! She really is a sweetheart and just needs someone special to give her the chance she deserves.

![]() Ria Ria is a 10 year old German Shepherd female, who came to the centre via an Inspector. She is housetrained, travels well, and could live with a quiet dog. Ria is looking for a quiet retirement home, and will make someone a lovely companion. She also enjoys a lot of attention, and would like someone to be around quite a bit to keep her company.

Aubrey
Aubrey is a 2-3 year old male Dalmation. Aubrey has lived the majority of his life as part of a free range pack of dogs on a farm. He has never lived in a home environment before, and had never been on a lead before coming to the centre. He cannot be left alone at the moment as he will need to be housetrained from scratch. Aubrey is very wary of people and new situations, so needs a patient understanding home. Aubrey would benefit from living with an existing female dog, as they are likely to give him more confidence.

Jake Jake is a 14 month old Labrador. He is a friendly dog who has led a very sheltered life. he is looking for a home with experienced owners who have the time to do some further training and socialising. Jake is only partly housetrained, and we do not know how he reacts to being left, so is looking for a home with someone who is around during the day to work through this. We do not know how he travels. can live with teenagers.

![]() Strike Strike is a 4 year old greyhound. He is a friendly dog who came to the centre with very little history. Strike is an ex-racing greyhound, so we would not home him around cats or small animals. he is likely to have a strong chase instinct, so he will need to be walked on a lead. we know that he travels Ok, but are not sure whether he is housetrained. he would be best not homed with children. Ex-racing greyhounds can make the most wonderful pets. They are usually used to being lead walked, and love nothing more that a comfy quilt to curl up on. Best not to live with cats or children.

![]() Kerne Kerne is a young adult German Shepherd cross. He mixes well with female dogs and would be suitable to go with a family with older children. Unfortunately the reason he was brought to us was that he had been thrown out of a car. Because of this we have no history for him. We were unable to find the owner, but a caring member of the public saw him being thrown out of the car and brought him to us immediately. Despite this treatment he seems very friendly and active and is looking for a home where he will have further training and plenty of love. He will need gradual introduction to being left alone, but this can be built up over time and staff can give plenty of advice about preventing separation anxiety. I am reserved

Rocky Rocky is a one and a half year old Staffie x Boxer male. Rocky is a lively young dog who is looking for an active home with someone experienced in bull breeds. He will need time spent on further training and socialising. He came in with very little history, so we cannot be sure if he is housetrained or how he reacts to being left alone.
Rocky is best not living with cats or children.

Gypsy
Gypsy is a 3 year old German Shepherd.
She could possibly live with a male dog, but apart from that we have very little history on her. She is a nice natured dog and is now looking for a home with someone with the time and experience to continue her training and socialising. Please ring the centre if you are interested and speak to Nickki or Leon.

![]() Sam Sam is a 5 year old Springer X Cocker. Sam is housetrained, travels well, can be left for a couple of hours at a time, but cannot live with children. He is a friendly lively dog who is looking for an experienced home with someone prepared to give him a lot of further training. He needs to be rehomed as an only pet and without children. Sam has a lot of energy, which could ideally be channelled into something constructive for him to do - like agility or flyball. I am unavailable
